Initial Training
Firefighter: approximately 160 hours
Recruit class is held twice a year (Spring and Fall)
Recruits attend two (2) four hour classes per week and several two day weekends for hands on skills practice and competency testing.
Emergency Medical Technician: approximately 150 hours
Recruits attend two (2) four hour classes per week and several two day weekends for hands on skills practice and competency testing. Along with hospital emergency room experience, and at least 8 hours ride along time experience with a paramedic.
Includes hands on and written testing for State certification.
Ongoing Training
Firefighter:
Must meet monthly training objectives consisting of actually firefighting skills and safety messages. Approximately 4 hours monthly and attend 75% of the monthly drills.
EMT:
Must maintain State and County certification by attending a minimum of 8 predesignated classes (O.T.E.P. - Ongoing training and evaluation program) annually, pass the written test and skills evaluation for each class. Also must attend a defibrillator recertification, quarterly, and district-specific emergency medical training during months without scheduled O.T.E.P. classes.
Firefighter/ EMT:
Must maintain all of the above - more than 10 hours per month.
