Q: How do I become a volunteer?
A:
Stop by our headquarters [Monday through Friday between 8am - 5pm] to pick up an application, call us, or come to one of our Tuesday night fire drills (they start at 7pm). Also see "Becoming a Volunteer" tab above.
Q: Why are the fire trucks white and not red?
A:
Across the country fire trucks can be seen in many different colors. The story goes that back when city fire departments become paid, they claimed red for their fire trucks. The thought was that people could see them better on city streets - and it is the color of fire. Volunteer departments distinguished themselves with white trucks. Volunteers are still a proud and large group... after all , that IS how all fire departments started. So based on that we believe it to be tradition, which there is a lot of in the fire service.
Q: Why so many vehicles or ambulances when I call 911?
A:
It is the way that the Medic One system is built in this county. When a 9-1-1 call is received, the dispatch center calls for the fire department and an ambulance company. If it is a life threatening emergency a medic unit will also be called for. You may also receive the department's second aid unit, staffed by volunteers from home or residents at the station. The theory is, that it is better to have unneeded units we can send back, than for needed units to be delayed or called for at a later time.
Q: Are you all volunteer?
A:
90% of our department is volunteer. We also have 4 paid positions: a Fire Chief, an Administrative Assistant, and two paid Lieutenants, (Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm).
Q: Is your meeting room available for use?
A:
Yes, if your group is a community-based non-profit group. The stations are available on a first come, first serve basis. The rental fee is $25. NO food or drink allowed, and documentation forms need to be filled out in advance. Call to schedule a time.
Q: Is there someone at your station 24 hours a day?
A:
Not always. As mentioned above we are a 90% volunteer department, but there is always someone in the area of one of our four stations.
