Fire Chief: Job Announcement

General Description of Duties:

The Thurston County Fire Protection District 13, also known as Griffin Fire Department, has made it a mission to promote, deliver, and preserve a feeling of securtiy, safety, and a quality level of service to the citizens of the community. The Griffin Fire Department operates four (4) stations and in 2019 responded to over 600 calls. Our department is seeking a strong leader with vision and creativity to serve as the new Fire Chief. 

During a normal work day, the Chief is responsible for the total operation of the fire district. Responsibilities may include developing plans for fire protection, water systems, station locations, disaster preparedness, and communications. Duties may also include developing budgets, hiring employees, setting district goals, allocating expenditures, responding to fires, and evaluating district effectiveness and district members. The Chief’s position works under the general supervision of the Board of Fire Commissioners. 


-Must have thorough knowledge of all aspects of firefighting and emergency scene tactics

-Must be able to formulate and implement written and oral instructions, plans, memoranda and orders

-Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment in the supervision of personnel, equipment, training programs and public relations

-High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in fire administration

-A valid WA State Driver’s License is required (if out of state, must have a WA license within first 90 days of hire date)

-WA State or National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is required

-Must pass background check, pre-employment physical, driver’s license check and credit check


-Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Business Administration, or related field

-At least three (3) years of experience in an administrative and leadership capacity for a fire department

-Live within 25 miles or 30 minutes of the Griffin Fire Department Station 13-1


-Annual Salary range of $110,000-$125,000; placement within this range is dependent upon experience and qualifications of the selected individual.
